GPA is King

College admissions people say that many things are used in determining who gets in.  Some of these factors include the transcript, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, how the student will fit in and contribute to the campus and so on.

However, of all these factors, GPA is the most important factor.  College admissions officers are more interested in the academic potential of the applicants.  Standardized test scores tell how well the student did ONE day.  But over 3 years of transcripts tell how the student did over that long period of time, how consistent the student was and how dependable the student has been.  Unless the student has a good GPA, a stellar personal essay may only lead the admissions officers to doubt the authenticity of the essay.  Sports extracurricular activities will not make up for that low GPA unless the student is a star football player and applying as an athlete.

Do get involved in student government, varsity sports, orchestra, art, student newspaper and so on.  Don’t get me wrong.  But, make sure that your GPA is way up there, near the top.
